A journal is helpful in not only setting goals but also tracking them. You can decide whether or not to write in your journal on a daily, bi-daily or weekly interval. This will probably depend on the type of goal you are setting. If choose to change your personal style you may want to check in a daily basis in order to report on your progress and what you are doing to change.
If you have a certain amount of money you need to save, you may consider checking in on a weekly basis. You can mull over your week and think about all of the times you resisted temptation on spending money on unnecessary items. This will enable you to feel good about the good habits you are creating and actually see how you are getting closer to your goal.
Before you get going on writing down your goals, make sure you are in a peaceful and positive state of mind. In this frame of mind you will commonly have a clear thought process that helps you clearly see what you want, or where you want to be. In this state of mind you are void of the negative thoughts that may hinder you to clearly state your goals.
Once you are in this positive state of mind jot down your goals. You do not have to write the details down, just what you envision for yourself in this positive state of mind. This is the time to really write down your dreams (action plan comes later).
Give your goals an expiration date. In order words attach a time frame to your goals. Establish whether they are immediate, short term or long term goals. When setting these time frames be realistic in order to help yourself succeed. You may be setting yourself up for failure if you do not give yourself enough time to accomplish these goals.
Revisit your list that was created during your goal setting session. It is now time to write down each goal in detail. Once you have done this, you need to create your step by step guide in how you will achieve your goals.
